Foods that have low GI value take more time to digest on the other hand and do not contribute to any blood sugar spikes. These foods would leave you satisfied after a meal. Therefore those foods that are ranked low on the glycemic index are the ones that you should incorporate in every meal.
You are advised to choose low GI foods that have an index that is less than 55. Examples of these foods include sweet potatoes, fish, skimmed milk, kidney or baked beans. Foods from the medium GI which have an index of 56-69 are whole wheat bread, popcorn and Basmati Rice. Foods that have high GI which has an index of 70 and above are French fries, processed foods and white bread.
When you consume foods that have low GI then you have a better time managing your cholesterol and weight. Diabetics can better manage their insulin through the glycemic index diet as well.
Eating foods that are mainly low when it comes to GI values will slowly trickle the glucose into your blood stream which will help keep your energy levels balances and this means that you will be feeling fuller for a longer time in between meals.
