You know that your kids do not like the taste of the same food especially when you serve it a couple of days straight. This is one of the reasons why they tend to only eat half of what is served on their plates.
- Do not treat food as a reward. For example. When you tell your kids that they can have cake after they have eaten the vegetable dished on their plates makes the cake would only look more attractive to them and the vegetables to be less desirable. If you put things this way, you are not helping them eat the proper kinds of food that a kid should eat.
- Allow your kids to cook with you. Most kids love to eat something they made for themselves. When you ask them to cook with you, try cooking healthy foods like homemade burgers, fruit muffins, fishcakes, and sandwiches. But for your teens, encourage them to eat with the rest of the family.
- Persuade your kids to eat regularly. Studies show that the most important meal of the day is breakfast. So, ask your kids to eat breakfast with you. A healthy diet for kids starts first thing in the morning.
- Do not use the work ‘diet’ for your kids. Tell them rather about the proper nutrition and good health. When you talk to them about diet, they become more conscious of their food intake and not on the quality of food that they eat.
- Talk to them about the health benefits that they can get if they eat the fruits and vegetables. Though health issue is not really important to them but you can associate this with their favorite activity or sports. For example. If your little boy loves to play basketball, tell him that by drinking milk everyday he can strengthen his bones and muscles which will help make him grow faster and taller.
