Renal Diet is a form of diet aimed in making the person practicing the diet to be in good health and take in proper nutrition. Renal diet focuses more on maintaining and controlling the loss of kidney functions. This kind of diet reduces the wastes that are building up in your body, the liquid in your blood, and the work load of your kidneys.

This diet controls the intake of potassium, sodium, fluid, and phosphorus in the body. Patients who have kidney disorders must follow a strict and proper renal diet. Here are some tips that you can consider to when you are going into this diet.

  • If you are on dialysis, you daily intake of potassium must be controlled. This is to prevent the high level of potassium in your body. This really common to people who undergoes a dialysis. The daily intake of potassium in your renal diet needs to be controlled if you are on dialysis. You need to avoid eating foods that contain high potassium like banana, tomatoes, orange juice, and potatoes.
  • Avoid foods that have high phosphate level. When your phosphate level is high, its short tern effect can cause itchiness. However, it long tern effect can cause bone diseases. You need to control eating dairy products, such as yoghurt, eggs, milk, fish, and cheese, which are common sources of phosphate.
  • In a renal diet, it is best recommended to control the intake of fluids. When talking of fluids, this includes juices, milk, water, soup, sauces, jelly, and custard.
  • If you have kidney disorders must control the sodium content in their diets. Controlling the sodium content means maintaining the fluid balance in the body. This is to avoid retention and high blood pressure. Instead of using salt to add flavor, you can use garlic, lemon juice, or pepper as a substitute.
  • You also have to limit your protein intake, in your pre-dialysis. This is slow down the development of your kidney disease. However, this may change when you start with the dialysis. You need more proteins in your diet when you are on a peritoneal dialysis, because large amounts of protein are lost in the peritoneal fluid that is removed. Protein is rich in meat, eggs, milk, cheese, sea foods, and other dairy products.
  • When you have kidney problems, always consult your doctor. A regular check up keeps your doctor updated on how your kidneys are functioning. When you are feeling something, call your doctor immediately or go to the nearest health center or hospital in your place.
